The Long-Term Resident Visa (LTR Visa) initiative, by Thailand Board of Investment (BOI), has enhanced Thailand's strengths as a destination for investment and high-quality professionals from around the world.

Launched on 1 September 2022, the LTR Visa has already been granted to over 7,000 individuals. This includes applicants from Europe (42%), the United States (19%), and Asia, including Japan (9%), China (5%), and India (4%).

In its 3 years (1 September 2022 - 31 August 2025), the program has contributed over THB 20 billion to the economy, generating income through 4 main channels: visa fees, estimated spending by visa holders in Thailand, foreign direct investments, and income tax from high-skilled professionals.

This initiative targets 4 key groups of highly skilled individuals:

  • Wealthy Global Citizens (investors and high-net-worth individuals seeking long-term opportunities in Thailand)

  • Wealthy Pensioners (retirees with stable income looking to enjoy their retirement years in Thailand’s world-class wellness and lifestyle environment)

  • Work-from-Thailand Professionals (remote workers with overseas employers, earning globally but living and spending locally in Thailand)

  • Highly Skilled Professionals (researchers, engineers, data scientists, advanced medical specialists and professionals in critical fields representing the “heart” of Thailand’s future competitiveness in BCG, Digital, EV and Semiconductors)

  • Plus Dependents (spouses, children and parents are all included, giving families the confidence to make Thailand their long-term home)

The LTR allows eligible investors and skilled professionals to enjoy multiple-entry privileges, digital work permits, tax incentives, and streamlined immigration services designed to international standards.

In January 2025, it was revealed that the Cabinet approved revisions to the LTR Visa scheme (for the Highly Skilled Professionals and Wealthy Global Citizen categories) which aim to make the criteria and conditions more appealing to a wider range of talent.

Looking forward, the BOI will continue to enhance the LTR program through digitalised applications, expanded tax incentives, and sector-specific residency tracks, reaffirming Thailand's commitment to becoming a premier global destination for talent and investment.
